The Golden Calf
Idolatry in the Age of Instant Gratification
In our humanness, we have a tendency to put things before God without a second thought. We get swept up in our busy days and weeks and months ahead, often neglecting the very One who formed our every moment.
In today's culture, we are used to getting everything right when we want it. Most things are just a quick walk or drive to the nearest store. Your favorite store doesn't have it? Just order it online! We're used to having things now, now now.
When we live in a culture that is constantly bombarded with a now mentality, we often embrace the temporary solution that gets the issue solved more quickly... Or the solution that feels better... In exchange for the permanent solution that the Father offers us, which may not be as nearly as quick of a fix.
In a now culture, we sacrifice relationship for comfort and true growth for speed. We like what's easier. We like things that can be done quickly so we can mark them off of our to-do lists.
I'm reminded of Romans 1:23 (MSG). They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.
Um, ouch! That certainly steps on my own toes!
The easiest thing is not always the better thing.
We make idols out of things that we intend to benefit us: our technology, our commitments... What we spend our time, energy, and resources on is where our hearts our.
The Lord has so many good things in store for us, if we are willing to look to Him!
This month, I'd like to challenge you and myself to take a slower rhythm- to focus less on now, now, now, and to hear the Father's gentle heart whispering "Wait... Wait... Wait."
