31 Days of Tough Stuff: Humility
Taking the Lowest Place
In this day and age, it's easy to place ourselves first.
Me, me, me. My stuff. My emotions. What I want. What I need.
I like doing what makes me comfortable. It's easier when it's all about me, really. That way, quite frankly, it's just worrying about one person: myself.
However, the call that Jesus gives is exactly the opposite! To care for and about more than just ourselves.
I'm reminded of John 3:30 here: He must become greater, and I must become less and less.
He must become greater; I must become less and less. With the Father becoming greater in me, I will look more like Him. I will talk and walk and act more like Him. With Him being greater and bigger in myself and my own life, there is less room for my selfish, human nature.
I have family friends, Nic and Rachael Billman, that are missionaries in Recife, Brazil. Their ministry is called Shores of Grace.
They work to help women and children on the streets... Those that are homeless and those that are in prostitution. I had the privilege of working with Nic and Rachael about 4 years ago, and those precious moments are stuck in my mind forever. I walked those broken streets with them, offering the hope and healing and love that only Christ can give. There were so many beautiful moments that I shared with those on the streets, praying with them and listening to their stories.
He must become greater, I must become less and less. Humility often requires sacrifice, and it's not always the easiest road. He calls us to go lower with Him. To serve the ones that are overlooked or under-served.
I am looking for ways to go lower-to sit at the Father's feet of love and mercy while extending the same to others.
Nic and Rachael put it beautifully in their song, "The Holes in Your Hands": The highest place is at Your feet, so I'll bring You my highest praise.
As you journey with me through the next 30 days, may the God of all grace be our Holy Craftsman: molding and shaping us to who He is calling us to be!
