Why?
Why? has probably always been one of my favorite questions.
It's the one I always ask the most.
When I was little, I remember peppering my dad with Why? questions.
Hey dad, why is the sky blue?
Hey dad, why do the stars look like that?
Dad, why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
Even in my incessant questioning, he would smile and answer as best as he could. And I think that's very much like our Heavenly Father, except He doesn't reveal the "Why" on this side of eternity always.
Graham Cooke has been helping me to rewire my mind.
I have always been a Why? person.
Graham Cooke was speaking and said, "Why is the wrong question. It's an invalid question."
"What are You leading me into that's going to upgrade my relationship with You? The real question is 'What is this for? What's the upgrade here? I know You're always up to something good, so what are You doing here?'"
That is such a huge shift for me to grab on to, but one that I think is important!
When we start to ask "Jesus, what are You doing?" instead of lamenting, "Why? Why me?" I really think we'll start to see His goodness more and more. We'll start to recognize His handiwork even in the most broken places.
Having an understanding that the Father is inherently good, that He is inherently for us, is a jumping board into the deeper things of His Spirit and His heart.
Asking Him to show us what He's doing instead of why something is happening, demonstrates a level of trust in the very nature of the Father.
We know He's good. We know He is for us.
So Lord, what are You doing?
Ask the Lord to show you the upgrade He is wanting to give to you in your relationship with Him.
If it's missing in you, He is going to show you His goodness and give it to you.
He calls us to live in wholeness. He's not going to leave you hanging. He's not going to leave you disappointed. He is not tired of you.
Why is the wrong question.
Start asking what with me.
Start expecting Him to show up and show out. Living in expectation, I'm learning, delights the Father's heart.
